Workshops/Programs

The environmental conditions are dwindling every day. Many new activities are being lined up for progress and development which is directly or in directly affecting the green cover. With the lessening of number of trees, climate change and global warming will become more prominent causing the rise of numerous other diseases thus creating unrest among the population. The current tree count for the World is 3.04 trillion, sounds massive but is actually 46% less than what existed before the agricultural phase and human activities began. This huge difference can be felt today in the form of rising diseases, unstable climatic conditions, extreme environmental catastrophes and much more.

The solution as we see it is not only planting new trees but is also caring for the ones existing currently. For doing so it is very necessary to instill the value of green cover among the future generations so that caring for the green cover becomes a Muscle memory. In view of the above, Green Health Foundation initiated a movement across colleges and schools of Mumbai for instilling the true value of green among students, under its tree plantation initiative Forest-A-Nation. The program, Edugreen Instil Program, will focus on bringing environmental issues close to the students so that the necessary actions can be taken by them, not as a pressured move but as a Fun activity.

The EduGreen Instil Program focuses on discussion of 8 themes with students in the form of presentations where the global scenario and other environmental activities, including some researches carried out, is explained to the students in simpler formats. Along with this, GHF also carries out interactive sessions for 30 minutes per month in the institute premises where students will be given a better understanding on the environmental issues. The program also has a REAL TIME activity of growing plants form seeds level where GHF will provide the required material along with the instructions for growing the plants.

The phase 1 of the program rules out successfully where Green Health Foundation interacted with 16 institute across Mumbai. Some of them were Institute of Science, Ruia College, Jai Hind College, Kanakia Schools and more. Its reached out to more than 5000 students and also created 1000 Plants which are currently nurtured by our expert team where they are preparing these plants for plantation in the coming monsoon. The phase was supported by KANAKIA Group. This program was covered on All India Radio, 25th April 2017 (5.30 PM- 6.00PM) where RJ Amita

interviewed our Program’s Co-ordinator towards the details of the Program and also made an open approach to all listeners to connect with the movement.

In case of colleges, GHF conducts similar sessions with the colleges, but the Real Time plant growth activity is carried out in plastic bottles & pots with the seeds collected from juice vendors where the lost green potential is revived. The entire activity is monitored by GHF and required instructions and help is provided. GHF intends to run this program continuously through various campuses and generate more than 10,000 trees per year.

Natwar Parekh Compound, Govandi was experiencing a bad environment with garbage being disposed all over the place and sewage pipelines being full and overflowing. Wastewater from sewage lines was observed to be oozing out from the sewage system and spreading over the area. Apart from this, garbage disposal by people wasn’t channeled properly and people were disposing off the garbage in the space between the buildings which had created a pile up of garbage of about 2 ft. This accumulated garbage was a continuous source of foul odor and a home for diseases. GHF took an initiative for cleaning the area up (building 1-12). People were hired by GHF for cleaning the sewage system by allowing free flow of water by unclogging the lines. A garbage picker was appointed and all the garbage disposed in a haywire fashion was collected and the place was cleaned up.

Awareness campaigns with respect to proper garbage disposal and importance of the cleanliness and sanitation was done by GHF. Due to these efforts from the organization, Natwar Parekh Compound has now appointed a regular garbage collector who maintains the surrounding clean. GHF has been continuously monitoring the area since then to maintain the look and cleanliness of the area and has also been involved in awareness programs to keep the interest of people towards cleanliness alive.

To deal with the water, sanitation and hygiene problem at Natwar Parekh Compound, MAHADA Colony, GHF has launched Project ‘Amrit’ there. To start up the activity as a part of our Stage I action plan, GHF organized an Awareness Campaign called “Jagriti.” on Maharashtra Day i.e. 1st May 2014. The GHF team had invited doctors as a part of the Awareness Campaign.

GHF organized an Awareness Campaign and Interactive Session, with the residents of Natwar Parekh Compound. In the session, the families were made aware of the facts and myths of a hygienic environment. Why it’s necessary to maintain a good condition in the area, how they can move ahead in this. The kind of problem they are facing in their day to day life regarding water and sanitation etc. In the Interactive Session,

doctors were the guest speakers for the event. They gave lectures on the importance of the hygienic condition in and around the house and the society. Also, they said what the after effect could be of living in unhygienic conditions and how their family gets affected by this. People’s general doubts relating to hygiene, sanitation and illness were also cleared. Apart from this, a Drawing Competition was organized for the children of age group of 5-15 yrs. The Conferences attracted around 200 delegates from around the country.

The environment is a major determinant of health. A clean environment is essential for human health and well-being. However, the interactions between the environment and human health are highly complex and difficult to assess. Environmental degradation exerts significant pressure on human health, leading to various types of health link diseases and disorders. Although environmental risk factors can affect the health of the whole population, some groups are particularly vulnerable to environmental pollution, including children, pregnant women, the elderly and persons with pre-existing diseases. So, the whole process of health and environmental linkages becomes the spotlight of discussion. Activities in the name of development, aimed to elevate the quality of life, have resulted in the deterioration of the very resources needed for sustaining life.

Plenary lectures, platform presentations, papers and posters presentations was conducted with focuses on crucial issues pertaining to environmental quality and human health. This was widely attended by prominent environmental, bio-medical and public health scientists, dental and medical practitioners, policy makers and stake holders in their respective fields. Collaboration between different sectors is crucial to protect human health from the risks of a hazardous or contaminated environment.

The objective is to bring researchers, doctors, practitioners, environmentalists and engineers on a common platform to disseminate the knowledge and experience sharing of environment deterioration and related public health risks. The presence of national and international delegates helped in extending the knowledge base to a larger domain of environment and associated health risks and discussions among various interdisciplinary working professionals.

Over 30 high end research papers were presented in the conference along with student papers on topics like ‘Management of Chemotherapy induced Dysgeusia: An important step towards nutritional rehabilitation.’; ‘Hybrid cavitation wet air oxidation pretreatment of Complex Industrial Wastewater for Enhanced Biodegradability.’; ‘EGCG-A promising anticancer phyto-chemical’; ‘Impact of Indoor Air Quality on Health Symptoms in a Residential Area’ etc. The conference was also awarded 18 CDE points.

Plantation

Trees are one of the main components of the environment which help in balancing the ecosystem as a whole. Unwanted cutting of trees and deforestation are harming our climate and ecosystem to a large extent. The effect can clearly be seen by a gradual increase in the global temperature and thus this is a global concern. Thus, plantation of trees is a crying need of the time. To mitigate the effects of deforestation Green Health Foundation conducted a tree plantation drive in association with NAATA Foundation in the Village zone of Aarey Colony, Mumbai on 11th July, 2015, with help of volunteers from Sandesh College, Vikhroli and Royal College, Mira Road.

One day prior to the plantation activity, GHF along with volunteers carried out digging of holes for plants. On 11th July 2015, plantation mainly fruiting plants was carried out so as to provide the villagers with employment and also an added incentive to care for plants. Also, the plants would increase the green cover of the city. Along with the fruiting plants, some non-fruiting plants too were planted. A total of 70 plants were planted on the day.

After the completion of the plantation drive the members of NAATA Foundation and Rotary Club of Bombay, Film City were given a token of appreciation in the form of Thank you letter for being present in the plantation drive and improving the tree cover of the city and supporting GHF. As a token of appreciation, they were also provided with a Tulsi sapling. The volunteers were provided with certificates for participating in the plantation Drive.

Numerous plantation drives take place along the year but due to lack of understanding of the importance of green cover, many of the planted friends die. Hence, GHF planted fruit plants so as to balance the environmental damage as well as provide fruits to villagers which would be the incentive for them to care.

GHF will be making frequent visits to the place to keep a check on plant health and will try its best to sustain the green cover spread by us. We look forward to creating a greener and sustainable appearance to the planet. We wish to ReGreen everything!!!

Deforestation is clearing the earth at massive rate which is reducing the quality of environment. Regular plantation or in other words reforestation

needs to be carried out to improve the environment. GHF carried out tree plantation activity at Sanjay Gandhi National Park on 1st July, 2016 in accordance with the government of Maharashtra’s Plan for plantation of 2 crore trees across Maharashtra. The activity was undertaken under the Forest-A-Nation initiative of GHF. The volunteers from Royal

College and Sandesh College were involved in the activity. The plants included Amla, Neem, Bamboo and many more. Forest-A-Nation will be continuously practiced by GHF so that the green cover of the country can be improved to a large extent and thus counter balance the impacts caused due to anthropogenic activities.

Benefits of planting trees range from environmental health to economics even psychological effects. Planting trees and then maintaining them reduce pollution, energy cost as well as increase green cover making the surrounding look soothing. A tree have numeral benefits other than mentioned above such as it saves water, prevents soil erosion and provide food as well as shelter to animals

and humans. To enhance the green cover a plantation drive was carried out at Maharashtra State Angling Association (MSAA) Powai, Mumbai by GHF on 21st September 2016, along with the volunteers from Ghanshyamdas Saraf College of Arts and Commerce. Plants like Ficus species, Hibiscus, Crepe jasmine were selected and planted. GHF will make frequent visits to check the survival rates as well as the health of the plants.

A plantation drive was conducted in Institute of Science (IOS) campus by GHF with a motto to increase the green cover of the campus and to increase the survival rate of the plants. The survival rate of the plants would be increased as the institute would take care of the

added green cover along with their existing plants. The Plants which were planted in the campus premises were ornamental plants Palm and Ficus species and fruiting plants like lemon

Green Health Foundation conducted a pot plantation initiative at Sheth Vidya Mandir English High School and Junior College of Science and Commerce on 1st September 2015, along with volunteers from Royal College, Mira Road. Plantation of plants like Duranta, Dracaena, Ficus etc. was carried out. Pot plantation allowed us to make pre concreted college area turn green. As the plants are planted inside the campus, care for the plants shall be

done along with the present plants in the campus thus increasing the survival rate of the plantation. GHF will be making frequent visits to the place to keep a check on plant health and will contribute towards sustenance of the green cover

GHF undertook a pot plantation drive at INS Hamla School, Marve, Malad, Mumbai. The basic aim was to create a better indoor air quality for the students at the school. Plants selected were mother-in-law’s tongue, ferns, peace lily and much more. The plants were strategically placed at the school to counter act on indoor pollutants and odor issues. Such projects can help building a better atmosphere for students which allows better concentration and a healthier being.

The D.A.V college is placed at Bhandup (E), Mumbai. The college holds a huge campus which has trees placed throughout the region. We recently carried out a fruit plant plantation drive in the area with the image of making fresh fruits available to students and college staff. Also the trees planted would serve as an addition to its green cover. The activity was carried out with enthusiastic students where they enjoyed digging holes, planting tress and then finally watering them (a minimum, as rains were already here!). The Activity forms a part of our AIM to plant trees in the city area to increase the green cover of the city under our tree plantation initiative – Forest-A-Nation!
